2018, Year of the Drill

That's right. We are kicking off 2018 with a DIY that involves use of a drill.

Look at how much cleaner it looks!!
Today's project was sponsored, sort of... we were able to get all new blinds for the house courtesy of both Bob's parents and mine, who got us Home Depot gift cards for Christmas!! I was so excited when I received those as presents, because that meant we were able to get rid of probably the most dangerous thing in our house -- the old (probably recalled) corded blinds.

For me, the blinds that came with the house were On. The. List. They were the wrong length. Some were warped. They were also old and discolored, impossible to get clean even after attempting three different cleaning products, and at best a nuisance. Curious kittens like to play with dangly things, and it took all of five minutes before at least two window cords were knotted up in a hopeless mess.  Oh yeah, did I mention they were the old corded type that *actually kill* about ten children a year? Yeah, those gots to go.

But... pay someone $150 to drill some holes in the wall and snap some parts together? Hard pass.

This was one of my quickest and easiest DIY installations ever. I'm showing you the photos from before and after the office because those ones were the jankiest and make for the most striking juxtaposition, but I was able to install two of them in about a half hour.

Basically, you just uninstall the old ones by snapping off the valance, opening the box mounts, and pulling out the blinds (ours were previously box mounted). From there, just patch up the holes left behind, and drill the new mounts on the sill. You then snap on the valance holder clips. You pop the window stick thing into the hole in the blind piece until it snaps in place. Then you snap in the new blinds, and voila.
Collage of all the things I just talked about... just follow the instructions, they will get you through.
We left ours on an inside mount because it looked better, but I kept the outside mount hardware just in case we ever change our minds.

The total cost for all four sets of cordless blinds was about $218, but after the gift cards our parents gave me for Christmas, we ended up paying a little over $50 out of pocket. The knowledge that my window treatments are now unlikely to cause brain damage is priceless.

Ta-da!
Happy 2018, everybody! I look forward to continuing to share our journey and DIY'ing our way throughout this new year.
